PhD degree at Stowers Institute for Medical Research

Affiliated Research Centre of the Open University

The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is an Affiliated Research Centre (ARC) of the Open University (United Kingdom).  Our research degree arrangement complies with the UK's Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) requirements for postgraduate research degree programmes and collaborative provision.

Application to this program is initiated by contacting an individual PI and is only one of the options available for a research based PhD thesis work at the Institute.

Candidate eligibility – Registration through the Open University normally will be offered to students with an educational background in the United Kingdom or with an equivalent educational experience, normally with class 2 (i) honours bachelor degree or equivalent in a relevant subject or a relevant master's qualification or equivalent. This programme may also be appropriate for any student who has already acquired the advanced and specialized knowledge in their field of study and is ready to directly begin lab based research. For a US educated student, this is likely to require a Masters qualification or three or more years of independent research experience.   It is important to stress that a degree award is expected to be completed prior to the 4th anniversary of enrollment in this programme. Students will be expected to have a sufficient level of English language competence.

Once accepted into the programme, individual students will be assessed with respect to their training needs, including generic skills training, subject training, and project specific training.  Their progress in acquiring these skills and training will be monitored by the individual’s Student Advisory Committee.

All students must be interviewed, and research proposals must receive initial scrutiny by the Research Degree Coordinator before an offer is made to ensure that it is likely that the student and project will meet the Open University standards.

For further information on this programme, see the side bar.  Some of these links are only available on the Institute's Internal website.
